Description
A flattened femoral head, showing marked osteoarthritic lipping; the superior surface shows crazed
and cracked cartilage; which is depressed below the level of the surface.
History
In April 1975 this woman, at the age of 67, tripped over a miniature Dachshund and
fractured the neck of the left femur. This was fixed with a sliding nail; she was well until one year
later, when pain in the hip developed. In 1977 the pin was removed, but the pain became worse
and in 1978 the radiological appearances of segmental collapse were apparent, and the femoral
head was removed.
